USAREUR Band Spring Tour

By SGT Jesse Welborn USAREUR Band and Chorus

The United States Army Europe Band hit the road from 27 April - 06 May on a tour of Hungary, Romania, and Budapest. The “Flags of Freedom” tour featured a total of 14 performances by the Concert Band, Dixieland Band, Brass and Woodwind Quintets, Rock Band, and Jazz Combo.

The tour began with back to back performances on April 27th and 28th by the concert band in Budapest and Debrecen Hungary. In Debrecen, the band was joined by guest conductor MAJ Istnan Pal of the Hungarian Military Orchestra of Debrecen.

From Hungary, the band travelled to Romania. On 02 and 04 May the USAREUR Rock Band performed live on the radio in Timisoara and Sibiu, respectively. In Timisoara the Romanian Anthem was conducted by CPT Fanel Constantin, and in Sibiu by MAJ Etiuganci Dumitru.

On May 4th, the Dixieland Band broke out of the main body to give a performance in Ruse, Bulgaria. After an unannounced street performance, they rejoined the concert band that night. For their performances in Bulgaria, the band added a suite of Bulgarian Folk songs featuring SGT Thomas Borgerding on Accordion, and SSG Jordan Armstrong on vocals singing in Bulgarian.

The Concert Band's final performance was a matinee in Veliko Turnovo, Bulgaria's ancient capital. On May 6th, the Dixieland Band, Woodwind Quintet, and Brass Quintets each gave their own impromptu performances all over Sofia, while the Jazz Combo performed for a reception at the Bulgarian Ministry of Defense.
